Flight Control: A Review

By

Flight Control. Ah an oldie but goodie. Developed by Firemint, it’s a simple yet deceptively addicting game that I couldn’t put down for at least three weeks after I first downloaded it for $.99. The basic premise of the game is to guide different colored planes of varying designs and speeds, to their designated runways on the airfield. As you guide more and more planes in for a landing, the faster and more frequently, planes appear on screen. In the most current version of the app, you can choose between five airfields each one in a different location with a higher or lower difficulty level.

The graphics in the game hearken to a forties or fifties retro type design that doesn’t aim for realism but isn’t too cartoony either. The design aesthetic combined with a catchy, jazzy opening tune brings the whole experience together. Plus, the tasty beverage provided by the stewardess when you beat your high-score is a refreshing touch.

The only thing that I would like to see changed in the game is the global leader board system. It only compares you with a handful of local players and you have to select an airfield in which you are satisfied with your score, and then log into the online high scores to see how you stack up based only on your score in that particular airfield.

If keeping up with your fellow pilots isn’t a big deal for you then the online leader board is no big issue. However, if you are into dominating the charts on a global scale, you may find the leader boards a little annoying.

Overall, Flight-Control provides an engaging, challenging gaming experience when you’re trying to pass the time, and has plenty of opportunities for fun updates by its developers in the future.
