The Art of Racing in The Rain

A friend of mine loaned this book to me and as soon as I read the first chapter I was completely hooked. “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein is about a dog named Enzo, who reflects on his life with his owner Denny, an amateur racecar driver trying to hit the big time. Stein does an amazing job of injecting both humor and canine wisdom, into our lives as humans through a dog’s eyes. As Enzo journey’s through life with Denny and soon Denny’s new family, Enzo comments on life through the point of view of a dog that desperately wants to be human…and have thumbs.

The entire book is set in the Seattle area of Washington State, the area I grew up in, so as a fellow Washingtonian the setting is especially real for me. However, the artistry Stein puts into his creation of Enzo’s world will resonate with any reader. The setting also plays well into the title in both a literal and metaphorical way that adds another layer to the plot of the book.

So as not to give too much away about the plot, I’m intentionally keeping this review short. However I will say that I found the book very enjoyable and it departed from the traditional “dog book” in that it wasn’t just from a dog’s point of view in the general sense, but it’s Enzo’s unique voice that winds throughout the book that makes it so unique and enjoyable.

“The Art of Racing in the Rain” is the neo-classic tale of dog and master navigating the happiness and tragedies of life together, and the result is a wonderfully crafted and heartwarming novel anyone will enjoy.

I've seen this book on the shelf-almost bought it once. Maybe I'll check it out if I get some reading time. Five hubs already in two days! Impressive. Welcome to hubpages. I was happy when I would manage to squeeze in one a week when I joined this past May. It can consume my whole w/e. LOL How about a little more profile info? :)

The car goes where the eyes go.

Enzo is such a great character, and I absolutely loved the book! It's one of my newest Kindle additions. Have you seen the book trailer for it? It's really well done.

It's a book trailer. Basically like a trailer for a movie, but made for a book. I haven't heard anything about Art of Racing in the Rain being made into a movie. But if it is, I'd definitely see it in the theaters :)

-ponders-

I'll have to try to make one for my book at some point.

Anyway, here's the link. It's an awesome trailer!

Maybe I need to read this. It keeps popping up everywhere for me recently. I'll add it to my TBR list. A dog as a narrator sounds interesting. And I love Seattle. I've only visited, but it's one of my favorite cities. Looking forward to reading more of your reviews.

Thanks for stopping by Shelly! I lived in Seattle for close to eight or so years and I loved it. I have dog now too so the combination of my own experience made the book all the more enjoyable for me.

I'm halfway through this book currently, it's amazing how the author managed to equate the art of wet race driving to so many aspects of life. Plus being a dog lover myself, this book being from a dog's perspective is entirely fresh :) Definitely one of my favourite books.
